Mary Oliver wrote this poem. I don't know if I have the line breaks right. It's hard to tell with this blog layout. But this poem...it's where I was a year ago, when I made the decision to leave what was expected and known and stale and oppressive, for what could be.
TWO: The Journey
One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice--
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do--
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Hello Brina from a fellow Minnesotan! I could never live anywhere close to the ocean, just the opposite from you, but greetings anyway!
Hi Ticharu,
My mom used to call Lake Superior "the ocean" when I'd take her up to Two Harbors. I love the big lake but it's not the ocean, that's for sure!
I think you're a Rachel blogger, too? Did you get to see the webcast today? I saw most of it. Fun, and great music.
Hi Ken, Oh, a boysweekender! How is it that we didn't know each other in high school? I feel the same thing about Chick (Chris); of course, he is a bit younger than you and me so it's natural, I guess, that I didn't know him, but at least I do now.
They're a great bunch.
I like what you said about respect, both for others and for yourself. Something I'm working on these days is integrity. That is central and it seems to be one of our main "tasks" in life, to find a way to live with integrity and love.
Oooh, pretty profound for 9:00 a.m.
So happy you wandered over here. I couldn't get to your blog; do you have one?
Brina
P.S. You didn't go to the h.s. reunion in August, did you? I had just left Vermont by then so of course I wasn't there. It was held at the Spanked Puppy or some such bar, and then a family event at the Sandbar beach.
Hey Brina, you go girl! Thanks for your continuing support. RF x
Hi Rachel,
Thanks for peeking at my blog. It's only fair since I read yours every day!
Tomorrow's the big day here, the new piano arrives in the morning. I really can't believe it!
Hugs, Brina
